Indian Sign Language Translation App

Product Description/Objective

Our innovative AI solution bridges the communication gap between the hearing-impaired community and the wider society. Designed to recognize and translate 75 hand signs and gestures from Indian Sign Language into English words, this technology ensures seamless interaction. Additionally, the product includes animated videos that visually demonstrate the hand signs and gestures corresponding to each English word, fostering inclusivity and accessibility in communication.

How does it work

Our solution uses advanced AI technology to process videos and identify sign language gestures. The process begins by extracting pose coordinates, which include the positions of the hands, face, and body edges, from each frame of the video. These coordinates act as a blueprint of the movements and gestures performed by the person in the video. By analyzing these hand movements in detail, the AI model identifies the gestures being made and matches them to the most likely English word associated with that specific sign. For instance, the image provided illustrates a person performing the gesture for the word "Student," demonstrating the system's ability to interpret and translate sign language gestures into meaningful English words.

In addition to recognizing gestures, our solution also visualizes them through animated motion videos. During the AI model's training phase, face and hand coordinates are collected from the videos to create dynamic animations that represent all the sign language gestures the AI has learned to recognize. These animations serve as a visual guide, making it easier for users to understand and learn sign language gestures. For example, the motion video below demonstrates how the word "Student" is represented in sign language, showcasing both the accuracy and clarity of the system's animated outputs.

AI-Powered Indian Sign Language Translator

Enabling Inclusive Communication Through Vision-Based Gesture Recognition and Animation

An innovative AI solution that bridges the communication gap between the hearing-impaired community and the wider society. This system recognizes and translates 75 hand signs and gestures from Indian Sign Language (ISL) into English words, fostering seamless, real-time interaction across diverse environments.

🎯 Project Objective

To empower individuals who are hearing-impaired by providing them with a powerful communication tool. The application not only interprets sign language but also visually demonstrates gestures through high-quality animations, making the platform both interactive and educational.

🛠️ How It Works: Under the Hood

Our system combines computer vision and pose estimation to identify and interpret sign language gestures from video input. Here's how the technology functions:

  • Pose Extraction Using advanced AI models, the system extracts keypoints—coordinates of hands, face, and body edges—from each video frame. These serve as a detailed blueprint of the performed gestures.

  • Gesture Recognition The AI analyzes these coordinate patterns to identify specific hand movements and matches them to their corresponding English words. For example, when the model sees the pose for "Student," it accurately translates and outputs the word in English.

  • Gesture Animation & Visualization To make learning more intuitive, the system also creates animated videos that visually replicate the recognized gestures. During the model's training, it captures dynamic hand and facial movement data to produce smooth, accurate motion visuals. These animations serve as learning aids, enabling users to visually correlate signs with their meanings.

👥 Who Is It For?

  • Hearing-Impaired Individuals: To enable effortless interaction with those unfamiliar with sign language.
  • Families and Friends: To help build stronger, more inclusive communication with hearing-impaired loved ones.
  • Educational Institutions: For schools and training centers focused on inclusive education.
  • Healthcare & Service Providers: Empower staff to better communicate with hearing-impaired patients and clients.
  • Corporate Organizations: Promote workplace accessibility and diversity through inclusive technology.

🚀 Our Vision

We’re currently advancing this solution to move beyond word-level recognition. The next phase aims to support full sentence interpretation in sign language, enabling the system to understand the context, syntax, and flow of multiple gestures. This leap will facilitate real-time conversation support, making communication even more natural and effective for all users.
